Genetic Modification

SGR’s main focus in this area is on the possible problems of genetically modified (GM) crops. We are concerned that there may be significant and irreversible impacts on the environment and on animal and human health from the introduction of these crops. We are also concerned about the degree of control that the biotechnology industry exerts over the scientific research and regulation in this area, and about the increasing control of the food chain held by a small number of multinational corporations.

Listing of Chardon LL (a GM forage maize) on the national seed list, thereby permitting commercial growing in the UK: Evidence presented to the Chardon LL Hearing (April 2000 and May 2002) (This material will be added to the website as it becomes ready.)
Five reports (presented to the oral hearing in May 2002) and a written report (April 2000) argue that the forage maize Chardon LL should not be approved for commercial agriculture in the UK, for a range of environmental, animal- and human-health reasons. The evidence presented has important implications for GM agriculture beyond this single crop. Report III describes original SGR research.
