LETTER TO JACK McCONNELL, SCOTTISH EDUCATION MINISTER
Re: Your World issue on Biotechnology, for use in Scottish schools

Web version of a letter issued on 26th November 2001 by SGR

Dear Mr McConnell,

Re: Your World issue on Biotechnology, for use in Scottish schools

Our organisation, comprising some 650 scientists nationwide (including Scotland), is concerned about the intention to place before Scottish schoolchildren an issue of the magazine Your World (vol. 10, issue 1), in which the text is subtly designed to give a strong impression that genetic engineering is the key to solving the world’s farming and food problems. Although it does ask some of the questions raised by opponents, it fails to give the opposing facts. Children are repeatedly asked to ‘Think about’ an issue, after having been presented with only the pro-GE side of the issue. They are also given suggestions for careers.

The biotechnology industry makes many claims, many of which are misleading, inaccurate or simply false. On the subject of GM crops alone, SGR has compiled a file of facts that counter the industry’s claims; the file already extends to 20 pages and is still growing. Our file disproves most of the benefits of GM that are stated or implied in the magazine.

Unlike chemical pollutants, genes are self-replicating and proliferate in the environment. If any harm results from genetic engineering, it may be impossible to turn back. A worrying possibility, put forth by experts on soil ecology, is that escaped transgenes may degrade the functioning of important soil micro-organisms, thus making the soil ever less fertile over time. If this should prove to be a reality, it will certainly not create a ‘healthier, wealthier, more sustainable future for Scotland’ if GM crops are grown there.

Arguably, the magazine could be used in a debate amongst sixth-form students, if a publication providing the arguments against genetic engineering is also provided. As the situation stands, it cannot be permissible to disseminate this subtle propaganda, written to promote the vested interests of giant corporations, to unwary schoolchildren — who are then told to ‘Go and educate your elders!’

Yours sincerely,

Dr Eva Novotny
