SGR: Promoting ethical science and technology SGR Wave

SGR CHAIR DR. PHIL WEBBER PRESENTS ‘A NEW APPROACH TO SECURITY’ TO THE CONFLICT RESEARCH SOCIETY ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN HODDESDON, HERTS ON 3RD SEPTEMBER.

Web version of a press release issued on 28th August 2003 by SGR

Dr. Phil Webber will present a new approach to security that recognises that military might can not guarantee security in today's world of “asymmetric” conflicts. Phil will argue that real security lies in addressing major environmental issues such as climate change, dealing more even-handedly with major land and resource conflicts (i.e. Palestine / Israel) and reducing the crippling levels of poverty which contrast cruelly with European luxury lifestyles.

Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) promotes ethical science and technology - based on the principles of openness, accountability, peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Our work involves research, education, lobbying and providing a support network for ethically concerned scientists.

Current SGR projects include Understanding the Military Influence on Science and Technology and regularly updated guides to ethical careers for scientists and technologists. SGR members are also contributing towards the development of GM and Climate Change policy.
