Web version of a press release issued on 13th March 2007 by SGR
Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) urges MPs not to support the Government's proposals to replace the UK's nuclear weapons system in tomorrow's parliamentary vote on the issue.
SGR Director, Dr Stuart Parkinson, said "The Government has not carried
out a thorough consultation and has not allowed sufficient time for a full public
debate on the issue. Last week's report from
the House of Commons Defence Committee on this issue highlights many areas where
there are unanswered questions. Indeed, technical evidence presented to the
Committee from US nuclear scientists casts serious doubt on the need for the
Government to make a decision on this issue at the current time. Hence, we call
upon MPs at least to vote to defer the decision on a replacement system until
we have had
time for a meaningful debate."
