Chemical engineer

Chemical engineers design and develop of diverse range of products. Your work will focus on changing the chemical, biochemical and physical state of a substance to turn it into something else.

Work could include the following industries:

  • energy
  • food and drink
  • toiletries
  • water treatment

Modern chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques, such as nanotechnology, fuel cells and biomedical engineering.

Particular ethical debates related to chemical engineering include: the environmental impacts of the production and use of fossil fuels; and the environmental impacts of plastics and novel materials. In particular, SGR recommends working only for companies and other organisations that are genuinely committed to the 1.5C target specified in the Paris Climate Agreement.
